I have ROP... i guess what I want to know is what has your experience been like with it... I was born with my left eye completely blind and my right one had 20/60 acuity as child.
After highschool my vision started to decrease more and now at 23 my visual acuity is 20/400. Have you had to have surgery to remove cateracts or any surgeries to repair retinal detachment? was either of these helpful to your condition or did it worsen it?
When i want to the specialist in 2003 he said their was a surgery could do to remove some of the scar tissue and stuff hut he also said that its really risky and would probably result in further lose of vision instead of gaining it..
the surgery he suggested was called a viteromy or something like that. not sure if Ive spelled it right. sorry for the millions of questions Im just curies as to how this has affected others
Yes, I have rop, except when I had it they called it rlf, but it's the same.
The doctors just told my parents to enroll me in a place for the blind or mentally retarded. My folks chose the blind school, guess they chose wrong. <lol>
All doctors I have seen say there's nothing they can do so I haven't had any surgery or anything on my eyes--they're just a lost cause.
Hope that helps--sort of.

Wow, harsh. That's kinda messed up suggestions from the doctors in my opinion but oh well. I to have R O P, and had lots of surgeries when I was a baby and young child. They detached my retna in my right eye and so that used to be my better eye and when I was young I could see shapes and distinguwish a lot more detail then I can now days. And now because of the surgeries my right eye has no vission so my left is the better one but I only have light perception in it. And since I was about six or so, my vision's stayed aboutthe same. Well, maybe more like seven or eight. haha Anyway just thought I'd put in my thoughts as I to have it and I hear its a rare disease or whatever.
I too have ROP, and only have light perception. I went to Memphis for surgery on my eyes when I was young, but it did not help.
I also had ROP and have been totally blind from my left eye all my life. I'm not sure what my vision was on my right, but I was able to see large print and used a CCTV, telescope and microscope. Anyway, I did have several surgeries also, I know one was for taking out cataracts, and one was for attaching my retina, and I know I had one or two others but don't know what they did exactly. None of them helped and I think actually made it worse, because toward the end, the sun really bothered my eyes. So I was totally blind by age 13.
I have stage five ROP. Up until the summer of 2005, I had light perception in my right eye, but in June of that year, a doctor had to remove the eye because it was hurting and everything I tried didn't help ease the pain. Now, my prosthetic eye is pretty much part of me. No vision in my left eye.
thanks for the reply's everyone
I have rop as well. I can only see light and shadows out of my rite eye.
i had both cateracts and retinal detatchment.
I've been blind in my right eye since birth and my left has 20/800. I can play most video games and yes I have several vetrectmies to stop my retina from detatching further.
I have ROP and I had surgerries when I was really little. I can see light and some colors and shadows out of my left eye and nothing out of my right eye.
I too have Rop; and the thing with me is, sometimes it looks all mixed up to me. Sometimes, I see light, and sometimes, I think I see light lol. Sometimes, it looks like steps, or sidewalks, are closer then what they actually are. Has anyone ever had this? I have never had surgeries because when I was diagnosed with Rop, it used to be called RLF; and the doctor's didn't see the need in doing surgeries because "it wouldn't help". Sometimes, I wish I didn't have light perception to be truthful. I can see shadows better at night. Now, I don't mind that at all.
Anyway, sorry for the long post.
Have ROP and had both eyes removed because the glaucoma and cataracts got so bad. Had slight light perception as a kid but that was gone by the time I was 6. Called this RLF when I was younger. I had other diseases throughout my life but still am around as a senior citizen at almost 60 years old. I have read that ROP or any blindness can be associated with a sleep problem; I'm lucky not to have that. Sorry for the long post here too.
I have that ROP, I think, because I can only see light. My right eye is smaller than my left one. Are all blind peoples eyes smaller than one another? Do all blind people have one eye smaller than the other?
i'm not sure, but I found out at an eye appointment I had a while ago, that my left eye has atryfied, or shrunken, due to not being used.
